ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

Master of Science in Biotechnology with a Specialty in Plant Biotechnology or General Biotechnology


The Master of Science in Biotechnology Program aims to prepare professionals with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that allow them to make responsible contributions to industry, academy, and other sectors of society.

Interdisciplinary approach to promote scientific reasoning, through courses, laboratory and research experiences, where various technologies are applied to the study of biomolecules, cells or various products of living beings.

Admission requirements


1. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences or related areas with a minimum academic index of 2.50.

2. Present evidence of the results of the tests of the Graduate Record Examination or the Postgraduate Studies Admission Test (PSAT).

3. Have approved at the Bachelor level a minimum of three (3) credits in each of the following areas:

  • Cellular-Molecular Biology or Biochemistry
  • Statistics
  • Calculus
  • Analytic chemistry

4. Submit two (2) letters of recommendation.

5. Interview with the Program Coordinator.

Curriculum of the Master of Science in Biotechnology


1. The master’s degree consists of 36 credits.

2. The program offers the student the opportunity of two specialties:

  • General Biotechnology
  • Plant Biotechnology

3. There is the option to graduate with a research project and thesis or comprehensive exams.

4. The student has stipend opportunities through work as a teaching assistant and/or research assistant.

5. The practice of ethical principles and social commitment are encouraged through the search for sustainable, adequate and innovative biotechnological solutions.

1. Option A: Research Project and Thesis. You must pass 9 credits in the courses:

  • BIOT 6220 Research Methods in Biotechnology I
  • BIOT 6221 Research Methods in Biotechnology II
  • BIOT 6990 Thesis in Biotechnology

2. Option B: Without Research Project and Thesis. You must pass 9 additional Biotechnology credits from any of the specialties or elective courses and take a comprehensive exam. You will not take the Research Methods and Thesis courses.
